The Joy of Gaming: December Challenge 2020 - Day 1: Pandemic - Iberia

  (See previous entries HERE.)

Pandemic - Iberia is a great new take on the Pandemic model. Here you have the addition of traveling by sea, as well as building a railroad to help you get to all the locations. I really enjoy it and the cooperative aspects make me super happy. This time we ran out of cards before we could discover the last cure. All the colors we needed were at the bottom of the deck and made it hard to get the final cure. We had them all, but just didn't make it to the base on time.

Desperately Seeking Joy #14

Today is definitely a day that I am seeking joy desperately! I feel overwhelmed and a whole onslaught of negative emotions. I keep trying to do little things to push them away, but the onslaught is causing these almost-panic attack like experiences.  The horrible thought that keeps going through my head is "other people can deal with these little things, why can't you?" And I know why I can't, but then all I feel is "it's not fair" that I have this disability. Which then makes me feel guilty for not being happy with what I have been given in life and then I feel like a horrible person and then it starts all over again.

Today is supposed to be a regrouping day. We arrived back home from my mom's yesterday and the I realized Thanksgiving is next Thursday. So I panicked. There was no relaxing yesterday, only crying. Then today I got Thanksgiving sorted, but now it's so many other things that are on my plate and I feel consumed and crushed.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some positive things happened during the day that made me have these little happy moments.

  • Organized my secret santa's gifts.
  • (Not pleased with the shipping of several things on Etsy, but also happy with some.)
  • My husband got me a fish sandwich! It was much craved and appreciated.
  • My daughter got excited to learn that Liam O'Brien used to voice the Wonderful Pistachio commercials.
  • Watched some of the final episodes of Supernatural with hubby.
  • The person on Board Game Geek who runs the Advent Calendar Geek List posted the 2020 list and I got to work on that post.
  • Worked on the prep for my Game-a-Day Calendar for my blog.
It was a day littered with tears and I tried to latch onto the small happy moments, but it's hard right now. I tried and am making an effort and that's what's important.

Desperately Seeking Joy #13

Gather up all the wood in the world and knock on it right now. I have had two really positively amazing days in a row. Part of me wonders if the exercise is kicking in. Another part of me wonders if my medication is kicking in. And still, further, all these wonderful vitamins are finally doing something! I don't even know, but I've been relatively happy! I've been able to get tasks done. I've been able to read and write. It's almost like a BP2 manic episode. This kind of "normal" happy and I'm accomplishing things!

That said, I'm still having some issues. Wanting to do things that it's not time to work on yet or still ignoring tasks that really are a priority to get done.

Some of the exciting things I've done the last couple days are:

  • Walking a ton of steps! 30 min walks.
  • Wednesday I walked 2 miles (not all at all once, but on the treadmill in 3 parts).
  • To reward myself, I had a super health Alaska Roll for lunch (salmon, avocado, cucumber).
  • Shopped for Hot Cocoa Bombs.
  • Picked up the Hot Cocoa Bombs I purchased at Target.
  • Drank that Hot Cocoa Bomb with the family.
  • It was National Vanilla Cupcake Day yesterday!
  • Made Vanilla Cupcakes!

  • Finished watch The Haunting of Bly Manor with my hubby-wubs.
  • Finished ALL the laundry! (There's more now, but I was officially done!)
  • Put a huge dent in the clothes sorting in my room.
  • Watched Critical Role Episodes 63 & 64.
  • Worked on D&D for the Tomb of Annihilation!
  • Have a date set for our next meet up for D&D ToA.
  • Chose my Christmas D&D One-Shot!
  • Realized I have a real Bag of Holding - My Bag of Holding Pursue really works like a real bag of holding. I need my keys? BAM! I need a pen? BAM! So cool!
  • Made a chocolate sundae for National Sundae Day!

I hope that by acknowledging how awesome things have been I haven't jinxed anything for myself. It has been wonderful feeling so good. It's been a good week.

Desperately Seeking Joy #12

I got my walk in and fought to be motivated. Did more than a mile, pushing myself to walk for 30 minutes instead.

Then.... it happened.... something I ordered yesterday was "Out for Delivery" TODAY! It made me so happy, because I needed it in order to make my pumpkin hand pies! The cookie cutters I needed in order to cut the right sized hand pies arrived a day early!

That meant that I could make my pumpkin hand pies, which turned out pretty okay, but weren't as sweet as I would have liked. Noted for future hand pies. I also used store-bought crust dough, which worked really well.

After everyone settled down a bit from some frustrations, I started working on my daughter's customer advent calendar, only to realize that it was getting really expensive. So this year she's going to get a classic candy-a-day advent calendar. But now I have a bunch of neat options for St. Nick and Santa! Or maybe we'll do a dollar a day again and put of our own delicious Christmas candies/treats in her calendar for her. Hmmmmm....

As I browsed Etsy for some advent calendar ideas (like hot cocoa bombs), I went over to Hot Topic, because I wanted to get my daughter the D&D tote bag I kept seeing and while I searched for those keywords, the most amazing thing popped up... D&D LOUNGE PANTS! (or pajama pants.... however you want to refer to them.) So I had to buy a family set of them!

Aback to Etsy, I found a d20 that said YEET and OOF! It's a bit expensive for one die, but at the same time it's meant to be a very special die for our daughter who says it all the time. And the die sparkles!

Further boppin' around the internet also turned me on to the Elf on the Shelf being quarantined and needed a mask!!! So you'd put them in a jar or container and that's where they'd have to stay for 14 days. I am going to put my own spin on it and the jar is new safety teleporter used each night. Either way, how cool! So now I need to shop for some masks.

Honestly, it's been a very festive day and I'm looking forward to a little tv watching tonight with my husband. Days like this make me feel so guilty, but I have to take time for me and to heal and to find joy, too. So much coolness and I'm working to throw myself into the season.

Desperately Seeking Joy #10

It was an incredibly rough night last night. I woke up a few times and just had this crazy sense of distress. I even went downstairs and laid on the couch for a little bit. Just a very weird situation that left me waking up earlier than I wanted and I couldn't get back to sleep.

Due to this unwanted situation, it left me feel a lack of energy this morning and it made my treadmilling incredibly difficult. I had to pep-talk myself on the treadmill just to get my mile in. It was kind of frustrating to have to be that big of a self-cheerleader. But I made it and that was my goal!

The rest of the day was spent on self-care, especially looking more into a healthy options for food. For example, I did some more research into muesli and am giving that a try. What I have noticed is that my resting heart rate has been better since I started walking, so hopefully that's a good sign of things to come.

Hopefully tomorrow will be more productive again, but I feel like having more active days leaves me feeling fatigued on the next day. What of this is medication and what of this is a physical reaction to things?

Desperately Seeking Joy #9

This week has been a bit different than previous weeks. I've started some health goals. After learning over the weekend that I'm slightly anemic, I figured it'd be good to get back on track for making my healthy decisions. The quarantine really did a number on my general physical health. We already know my mental health is a growing struggle.

So first I started with one of those "30 Days to 10,000 Steps" things, but I'm no fool. To push myself that fast would only create frustration and could result in pain (I have a fickle foot that likes to be troublesome). For me personally, that is. So I took the challenge, but divided it up to make it manageable and attainable for myself. For this first week, I wanted to just be able to get myself to walk a mile each day. By the end of the week I should maintain no less than 3,000 steps a day.

The next health goal was to drink my two bottles of water a day. I have one of those water bottles that has the "drink this much by this time" marks on it. I don't always adhere to the time, but I try to drink two bottles a day.

Other health goals will be added, but I have to start somewhere. In addition, I've added in some more vitamins to my daily goal and I'm watching my eating so that I can start to take stock of what things I need to start tweaking. Sadly, I'm noticing that two of the things I'm trying to improve in my health have somewhat contradictory diets. One wants me to eliminate meat as much as possible, while the other asks that I add in some red meat to boost my red blood cells. Go figure my health would be so irritating.

Today, though, has been a very productive and fulfilling day.

  • Watched some Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath.
  • Walked a mile.
  • Finished Critical Role: Campaign 2 - Episode 61.
  • Purchased a christmas shirt for my daughter that's D&D related.
  • Took out the trash and recyclables.
  • Put up the fall scarecrows by the front door.
  • Put the Halloween bins in the crawl space.
  • Took a few extra bins into the crawl space to provide more room.
  • Put up the fireplace Thanksgiving decorations (including wreath).
  • Put up the shelf Thanksgiving decorations.
  • Put up the outside Thanksgiving decorations.
  • Earned 43 Zone Mins on my Fitbit.
  • Researched healthy diets.
  • Found out how long my leave is for.
  • Went to the grocery store for spaghetti ingredients.
  • Chopped veg, cooked the meat, and assessembled the spaghetti sauce.
  • Put away the Thanksgiving bin and other stored items in the closet.
  • Planned (on paper) our Alternative-Thanksgiving for my mom and us.
  • Worked on organizing my clothes in my bedroom.
  • Started watching Critical Role: Campaign 2 - Episode 62.
  • Worked on my Birthday/Christmas list on Amazon.
  • Worked on my daughter's Christmas list on Amazon.
  • Sorted 25 advent calendar gifts, assigning them numbers.
  • Wrapped 25 advent calendar gifts (and photographed).
  • Monitored and cooked the spaghetti sauce all day (ooof).
  • Made the rest of the dinner (noodles, bread).
And at 5PM I turn to trying to relax for the evening. It was a very busy day. I know it might not seem like it, but it definitely kept me busy from minute to minute. I felt so "finished" that doing the noodles for dinner almost made me freak out, because I felt like I forgot how to make noodles. And I still feel so "finished" that I need to remember to make a frozen meal of our dinner for my mom tomorrow.

But today was a goodish day. Lots of stuff done. Met my fitness goals. Still time to relax in the evening.

Desperately Seeking Joy: Halloween 2020

Halloween was weird this year. We have up some decorations, but it just doesn't feel right. So I'm trying to make today "joyful."

The morning we all kind of had our own little things to do. I ended up watching The Blair Witch Project and then followed it with Paranormal Activity.

My daughter put on her dragon costume from last year and it still fit her!

I made a basic lunch of chicken nuggets and Cheetos Mac n' Cheese.

I spent a good chunk of the day checking the front patio for packages that never came. My husband then reminded me that so many post offices had been told not to deliver mail or to sit on mail, etc. That broke my heart for so many personal and political reasons.

I decided to be creative for dinner and I made Mummies in a Sand Storm (mummy hot hogs and rice-a-roni).

After dinner, I received a notification that my bloodwork results had come back. I went to read through them and saw that one of my numbers was low, which indicated anemia. I wasn't sure why, but I got out my iron supplements that I hadn't taken and I took one. Within two hours I felt more focused and ready to do things. So I wonder if some of what I'm going through is related to having anemia.

I just hung out most of the evening and I actually worked on my calendar. Between having some caffeine and taking the iron supplement and the Cider Vinegar gummy, I was getting all sorts of stuff done.

This entry is wonky, but it was a wonky day for me. Not a normal Halloween, but we had a good one as a family and, no, we didn't go trick-or-treating like so many people in our community.

Desperately Seeking Joy #7

Seeking "joy" is hard. I'm at the point with this one particular medication where I am feeling incredibly muddled and cloudy. You know how Hollywood depicts mental institutions? I get it now. Everyone just stare off or shuffle around aimlessly.

But I found if I ingest some caffeine it helps to take that muddled edge off. I just have to find the right source and the right amount. Too much causes the anxiety to flare up. Too little... well... is too little.

I am trying to be activity driven. I make a list of the things that need to get done and I do one thing, then take a break and then do another. It worked really well when we were at my mom's house. She throws out tasks at breakneck speeds and I get them written down and then I slowly work to accomplish them.

Today, though I started with some tasks to get the day rolling:

  • Arranged a Zoom meeting for my mom with my brother.
  • Made an appointment for my own blood draws for lab tests.
  • Cooked breakfast for the family.
  • Did the dishes from breakfast.
  • Folded the bed sheets that were in the dryer.
  • Ran a load of towels and blankets.
  • Watched 40 minutes of Critical Role: Campaign 2 - Episode 58.
  • Fed the dogs and let them out and other animal care needs.
  • Got dressed in fresh clothes for the day.
  • Helped with getting recycles out.
  • Made a grocery list and scheduled our grocery contactless pickup.
  • Ordered some cleaning supplies on Amazon.
  • Finished my blog entry about part one of our Halloween One-Shot.
  • Logged my fasting and my food intake.
  • Reviewed some nifty stickers for my calendar that are self-care oriented and a steps challenge to help myself get walking again.
  • Printed out Christmas Countdown Tags for my Iggle 25 Days of Cheer Swap.

I shred this list with my husband and he said it's alright to take a break. But I didn't want to take a break. I wanted to feel motivated to do anything! So I drank a little more RockStar.

  • Watched more Critical Role: Campaign 2 - Episode 58.
  • Cut out and hole-punched all the tags for the swap gift.
  • Looked for some nice little trinkets to add to the swap box.
  • Prepared lunch for my daughter.
  • Cleaned up lunch for my daughter. (Seriously kid.....)
  • Discussed a Board Game Advent Calendar for 2020.
  • Spent time browsing Critical Role Shop and bought their newly released pajamas before they went out of stock!
  • Worked on parsing down a list of over 60 board games to 31 for an Advent Calendar.
  • Sorted 31 games into similar categories so the Advent Calendar will flow, then retyped the list on the computer.
  • Got the mail.
  • Returned the garbage and recycle bins to the garage.
  • Tried on the two new pairs of pajama pants I got from Hot Topic (Luke's Diner & Ravenclaw).
  • Wrote out a wedding card to some friends who got married during the pandemic.
  • Worked on gathering all the pictures to make the game-a-day Advent Calendar for my husband.
  • Worked on revising my Christmas/Birthday list on Amazon.
  • Connected with a friend who was checking in with me.
  • Started work on the digital daily game-a-day calendar.
  • Talked to my mom about the handyman we're trying to get ahold of.
  • Made dinner.
I spent my evening relaxing and talking with my husband. We got in an episode of Bly Manor. Strangely, it was one of the episodes that really messes with your mind, but ends shockingly! Wasn't expecting that for our one episode to watch.

So, I guess, today in its own way I found joy by keeping myself busy. I saved some tasks to work on tomorrow so I have a way out of staying in a funk.

Desperately Seeking Joy #6

Every time I get an email from a politician, I think of that exchange in Clue:

Cop: What's going on around here? And why would you lock me in? And why are you receiving phone calls from J. Edgar Hoover?
Wadsworth: J. Edgar Hoover?
Cop: That's right! The head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation!
Colonel Mustard: Why is J. Edgar Hoover on your phone?
Wadsworth: I don't know, he's on everybody else's, why shouldn't he be on mine?

It just makes me laugh inside. This was brought up, because in my trash email there was an email from Pete Buttigeig (the campaign). A good laugh to start the day.

The majority of the morning was spent muddling. I paced excessively. I hemmed and hawed over what to do with myself. I did some small tasks requested of me by various people and did a bunch of shopping for my mom. But then... as I was sitting on the couch just flipping through the lists of recommendations or coming soons on Netflix... I saw it...

If you haven't read Dash and Lily's Book of Dares and it's sequel, The Twelve Days of Dash & Lily, and you love quirky romantic stuff around the holidays... oh my goodness... The books are edgy and have language and sexual references and can be a bit over-the-top with the Dash sections of the book, but they end just so very sweetly. I do so love them. So when I saw this trailer, I wasn't sure what to think... if I was excited that they made it into a Netflix series or if I was devastated that they toyed with the idea of turning it into a series that will probably be canceled and will screw up all the beautiful images of romance that I have in my head. I admit... I cried. I couldn't figure out if it was from happiness or sadness, but I am excited.

Before settling in for a game to help exercise my broken mind, we had to run up to my daughter's school and pick up her book club book. Then we also swung by the grocery store for a few items and picked up lunch at Kwik Trip. They had a new pizza called the Oktoberfest pizza. It had brats and onions and peppers and cheddar cheese on it.  It was pretty ok.

Once we were settled again, I finally got to play a game. I can't tell you the last time I played a board game, it has been such a long time. But I pulled out a game that was a familiar and yet new: Ticket to Ride: United Kingdom.

Due to my head being so very off, I knew I wasn't going to win this game. But I had fun trying. We were within 4 points of each other. We discussed the different aspects of the game that caused that four point difference and it was interesting enough.

It was then time to work with my daughter on her Halloween One-Shot character. My husband walked her through the process. My daughter was having an absolute ball. She chose to be a Kobold Rogue/Arcane Trickster named StarShadow.

It is going to be a fun little adventures. A Halfling Wizard, Halfling Rogue, Kobold Rogue, and a Yuan-ti Pureblood Druid. I swear... we make the strangest groups of people.

The night wrapped up with a quick movie that we rented for cheap on Amazon Prime Day. You Should Have Left was a movie that was on my list for a while and is a Blumhouse Production. To mean that's more of a hit than a miss, but you can't always be sure.

It wasn't a horrible movie. It kept us guessing, but it also had those moments where you weren't, "Clearly this isn't working and you 'should have left.'" Hahaha! But it raises some interesting questions about the supernatural. The movie uses some typical American Gothic tropes and for this film... location is important. Sadly, it leaves some problems  with the believability factor that is supposed to hook you and the twist at the end, for us, was an obvious surprise.

I'm glad I rented it and didn't buy it, because it isn't one of those supernatural films that makes me want to watch it again to catch more details. The film takes its time to make sure you absorb the details in the same way the characters do. But it was interesting enough for a suspense film for the evening.

Today was littered with joyful moments, but it was a good bit of a muddle and feeling indecisive about so many things. I just hope tomorrow is better.

Desperately Seeking Joy #5

This morning started off rough. Turns out the change in my medication now causes me to become dizzy and nauseous if I don't eat something with the medicine. I'm used to not really eating much in the morning. Since that was the case, I had to wake my husband up to help me with a bite of breakfast, because the whole world was spinning.

Then it was just watching some television and getting a few chores done around the house.

I had some slips, but I made it through.

Oh! I got my iggle Halloween cards  mailed AND got the package for my iggle swap done. I wish I had taken a picture before I sealed it up, but oh well. And we made grilled cheese and tomato soup for dinner. Can I just say that grilled cheese is a stressful dish for me! As easy as it is, it is sooooo easy to burn. Drives me nuts! Now I feel determined to master it, but I don't feel like watching Chef again. Eh...

So my day had little glimpses of joy, but at least I stayed out of the darkness.
