Wii Wednesday #4

I spent a good bit of today preparing for the International Geek Girl Pen Pals Club Camp 2020 (IGGPPC Camp 2020)! I'll be posting daily summaries for each day of camp. Here is the one for today.

I was working hard on the walking stuff today. Did a walk with my daughter and did some treadmill walking. Got up to my 6,000 goal by 1:30PM. That's encouraging and positive. So I hope I can keep that up.

Our Wii Wednesday started with some Just Dance. My husband even did a dance with my daughter. Then my daughter did a little Wii Fit Plus running and stepping. They ended with a new car racing game. Our current goal is to get our daughter to play without her mouth being on auto. Haha!

My husband beat my daughter... oh my!

Wii Wednesday #3

Today started out with another doctor's appointment that took up a chunk of my morning and stopped me from getting into a groove to get work done. Since we were out, we also made some stops to pick things up. I was lucky enough, though, to have gotten a little bit of the next D&D Out of the Abyss story going. I made a GoogleForm for my husband and daughter so that I could figure out what direction they're going to be going in. It would make it easier for me to plan if I knew where their heads were at. So I was excited to have that done before we went out and did all the other stuff.

Once home, I fought the battle of lethargy. I don't know what was making me so exhausted. I did, at one point, force myself off the couch to go for a walk on the treadmill, but even that didn't last for longer than 15 minutes. I reset my FitBit to yell at me once an hour if I don't take a minimum of 250 steps. That didn't stop me from falling asleep for a 30 minute nap around 2PM.

But the point of today is to get in some family Wii time! So after my daughter finished her online Girl Scout CampIN and making her toilet-paper-roll-binoculars, we got going.

My daughter started with some solo running with a cat and then got angry at the WiiFit Board for telling her she was jumping. I took over and did a couple activities and then we wrapped things up with a family game of bowling. Family bowling always brings back from memories.

Then I checked in with my mom, because she got some of her test results back from Monday. We're waiting to see if they're going to pull her out of the study she's in. It's for chemo medication for women with Ovarian Cancer (I think... I forget the details of the study). But she was in good spirits and that's what's important.

As I started to settle in for the night, I tripped into the rabbit hole of producer Oren Peli. I am a hardcore Peli fan (and Wan, Whannell, Sandberg, Blumhouse). Now I'm looking for Area 51, because I love found footage horror movies. He's ticking off the boxes for the various supernatural styles of found footage, which is really why I like the guy. So now I follow him on Twitter and I'm more gungho than ever to get back to finishing my horror movie articles from last October that I stopped completing when I found out my mom's cancer had come back.

Since I don't have to sleep in, though, it's going to be an early night and I am going to finally get a good night's sleep!

A Nerdy Teacher's Closet: Week 13 (11/26 - 11/30)

This week was simply meant to round out November Sci-Fi Month! I tried to get in some last minute nods and stay comfortable while doing it. Luckily towards the end of the week I was able to wear my ultimate field trip shirt! I'm not running from zombies or anything, but there was the chance that I might not make it back.

Week 13: 11/26 - 11/30

Monday, November 26, 2018
We've fallen off the rails a bit with our Keto-ing. Without an oven it gets a bit rough. So this was my way to say, "Let's start over!" On top of that, it's super heroes. #scifimonth TeePublic.com

Tuesday, November 27, 2018
There was no rhyme or reason for this shirt other than I felt like wearing it. It matches the Ant-Man shirt I got from Loot Crate. I tried to do couples shirts with my husband, but that never works out. Either way, more Sci-Fi with some superhero high-tech craziness and girl power!

Wednesday, November 28, 2018
It's been cold in my classroom. Well, not mine specifically, but the other people on my floor in The Tower. So I kind of wore this shirt to be silly for them. The really funny thing is that my one coworker actually asked to borrow my kettle and some tea! Totally made my day. Then, of course, I'm still trying to give some love to the Sci-Fi month theme. Woot Shirt!

Thursday, November 29, 2018
Another shirt I just felt like wearing for whatever reason. Kind of trying to wrap up my Sci-Fi month with some final nods to Sci-Fi. Star Wars and Retro PacMan. I wanted my daughter to wear her's with me, but it just wasn't in the stars. Get it... STAR Wars... in the STARS. yuckyuckyuck.  TeePublic.com (Link not located.)

Oh to be a Red Shirt. This is one of my favorite shirts to wear on field trips. We try to wear our school colors or school apparel so that we can be recognized and stay together better. But, well... Red Shirts don't always make it back. I'm savvy enough to make it so.... so back I mean. I've had this shirt for quite awhile, so I'm not sure where I got it from. They're everywhere though and if you like it you probably already own it.

5 Fandom Friday - Smart Phone Apps I Cannot Live Without

Awe man! Apps were something I could live without, but recently I've found a few that I absolutely adore and use on a daily basis.

Smart Phone Apps I Cannot Live Without

1. Daylio
I love this app, because I'm able to track my moods and assign specific labels to what is causing them. It helps me to remove myself from stressful situations and really think about what is triggering me to feel horrible, depressed, or just completely nonfunctional and what kinds of things make me feel good and able to handle things.  I really recommend it if you're wanting to help remove stress from your life or are looking for ways to tap into the things that bring happiness to you. I've been using it for over a month and it's been amazing!

2. FitBit Tracker/MyFitnessPal
If you have a FitBit, I'd assume you use the app, but I shouldn't assume that about people. I love using it, because I can track other things on-the-go and I can compete in step competitions with friends. It ties into MyFitnessPal, so I kind of use the two simultaneously in order to track my health stats for eating, macros, and physical fitness. Good times!

3. Zombies, Run!/CastBox
Another one that goes with the other for me, at least. I've been trying to catch-up on Critical Role and I can't really sit and watch YouTube or even just have it going in the house while I work, so I've had to go Podcast. I know it's not the best format for catching-up on Critical Role, but it's the one I have. So I listen to it when I'm working out. While I listen, I run Zombies, Run! It breaks into the podcast, because I can listen to an external app for music or whatever. What I love the most about it is that when you play Zombies, Run! you pick up items for the your township while you're running and it just speaks over my podcast, so while the people on Critical Role are doing their stuff, I'll hear "found a pack of underwear" or "found a book." Sometimes... the finding an item matches up so hilariously with the podcast that I almost cry from laughing so hard. Good stuff that makes my hour and a half workout pretty great!

4. Pokemon GO!
I am embracing this, purely because it has become something my daughter and I do together. In the summer, we poke-hunt together. I get her to go on long walks out in the fresh air and we travel for 3-4 miles around our small town checking in at stops and catching Pokemon. We take turns and sometimes, when I'm out doing my walks without her, I'll make sure the hit-up the pokestops for her so that we can get supplies.  It's a me and her thing, just like playing the CCG and the DS games. My husband always rolls his eyes at us.

5. Instagram
I think I'd just like to point out that I don't go picture-posting-crazy on here, but I find scrolling through brings me more peaceful happiness and connection to things I like than Twitter or Facebook do. There's no political things or people being jerks, etc. It's just people sharing their awesome moments or cool pics of games or my favorite actress posts all her neat traveling adventures. Yeah. Anyways. Cliche, but I've come to really like it.

5 Fandom Friday - Gateway Fandoms That Made Me Who I Am Today

(Republished from 8/11/2017.)

I haven't done these in a long time, but I know the ladies who were running them became a bit busy. Look and my blog and tell me I don't understand that.

Essentially 5 Fandom Friday was a day to celebrate 5 things about being a fan! This was originally done by The Nerdy Girl blog. Since it took me so long to get into them, I figured I'd start from the very beginning and try to keep up on Fridays.

So let's get things started!

Gateway Fandoms That Made Me Who I Am Today

1. The X-Files
I was that kid who snuck into their basement on Sunday night to watch The X-Files or hide in my room. I "wasn't supposed to" watch stuff like that. Finally my dad watched some with me and that was really cool, but I loved The X-Files. I even got to comics and I hid them in the draw next to my bed. It fed all my needs and love of Sci-Fi/Supernatural/Paranormal. You could even credit this for helping to formulate my love of ghosts and zombies and whatnot! Amazing! I want to believe.... and I do.

2. Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card
I read this as a Sophmore in High School and it blew my mind! I think it was, honestly, my first real exposure to Sci-Fi reading! I had already read Fantasy and Fantasy is cool, but there is just something about Sci-Fi that I love without question. So much so that I've created a Sci-Fi reading unit for my sixth graders. It makes me the happiest when I'm reading Sci-Fi. I even have "Ender" engraved on the inside of my class ring.

3. Settlers of Catan
Our friend Jim brought this game out one day and I was completely hooked. So much so that I think I bugged him and my husband with how much I wanted to play it. It was just the coolest thing ever! The new got into Pandemic and Hero Quest and now my husband and I are gamers and we own over 300 games. Thanks Settlers!

4. Star Wars
You know this is where it all started! One of the first geeky movies I remember watching as a kid and I was from the 80s! We had the toys and everything! Star Wars permeated my life and kept me open to that type of sci-fi/fantasy and really created my love of geekdom. Moving forward I was addicted to Labyrinth and Adventures in Babysitting and Indiana Jones and other Spielberg awesomeness. I had so much to geek for!I could probably even credit it with keeping me open to amazing things like Mystery Science Theater 3000 when I was a kid! I loved it and it still permeates my adulthood today! Shockingly, I'd say Star Trek, but I wasn't really allowed to watch Star Trek and/or I didn't understand what it was as a kid. I remember one of the times I sat down to watch it at my parent's friend's house, my parents made fun of it and said to turn it off. I dunno. But for some reason Star Wars as alright and I am thankful for that!

5. Super Mario Bros
My brother and I each got $50 for Christmas. We pooled our money to buy a Nintendo Game System. Now, my brother had a tendency to take it over more than I did, but I loved my time on it and I loved playing Super Mario Bros. I've played almost all the games, but not things like Mario Cart. SMB was honestly my gateway to gaming and now we've introduced it to my daughter, but she prefers the Lego games more than SMB. Sad, but true... but she's REALLY good at gaming. I'm working on all the convoluted new expectations of using a controller. Man oh man.

Pac-Man Ghost Felt Stuffy

There are things that I am crafty at, because they seem to appeal to a certain aspect of my life. I love perler beads. I love Scrabble letter crafts. I think I might love crocheting, but we'll see how that goes. I like being super hands on and crafty, not having the project require my nerves to be steady.

Things I've struggled with, because they are just TOO tedious for me to focus on are stitching and sewing. . . meticulous little crafts. I can't handle all the measuring and stitching and sewing and thread types and all of that. It just becomes a bit too much and becomes incredibly overwhelming and instead of being calming and focused, it triggers that freak-out over an inability to complete the task in a positive and efficient way. I also am a terrible judge of measuring. Strangely, it is just when it comes to everything BUT cooking. I can estimate with the best of them in cooking, but not in, like... everything else. Like my perfectionism goes out the window.

Either way, the International Geek Girls Pen Pal Club had their June Craft Challenge as doing a challenge in felt. I couldn't pass this up. I'd been wanting to try my hand at some felt projects. So I looked for something basic and straightforward to start with. A Pac-Man ghost! Oh yeah!

Materials
  • 1 sheet of felt (I used blue)
  • 4x2 piece of white felt
  • 2x2 piece of primary felt (I used blue)
  • thread that matches the color of the felt, or whatever color you want. Know it will show.
  • Needle
  • Fabric Glue
  • Stuffing
  • Scissors

Instructions
  1. I folded over the felt, hamburger style.
  2. Trace the outline of the ghost. Use an online image to choose between a 3 or 4 legged ghost.
  3. Cut along your trace. I left the part where it was folded in tact at the top.
  4. Save the extra felt to cut the pupils for the eyes and extra stuffing.
  5. I used an Overcast Stitch around the edges, leaving a leg open flip the ghost.
  6. Flip the ghost inside out. Use your pinky or a pen to help push down the legs.
  7. Stuff with preferred stuffing.
  8. Sew up the bottom leg. Try to fold in the point of the leg so it looks rounded like the others.
  9. Knot it the best you can.
  10. Cut the white pieces into two equal eyes. They should be ovals. Trace or freehand to the best of your ability.
  11. Use fabric glue to glue them onto the front.
  12. Cut out the small pupils and place them facing the same direction.
  13. Use fabric glue to glue the pupils.
  14. Leave to try.
  15. Enjoy!

Good luck and I hope you can make a better lookin' one than mine. More practice. More perfection.

My Geek Fitness Plan and Goals (Shortened Version)

My Fitness Goals broken down into easy to digest tablets that align with my badges.

Walking
10,000 steps a day = about 5 miles a day. Use the Runtastic Pedometer App to help track your steps every day. The goal is to Walk like a Hobbit to Mordor and Back! 3871 miles.

Gym
It's hard to get to the gym, so any physical activity at the gym or outside counts as gym work. At least 3 days of week at the gym or some sort of outdoor exercise.

Gaming Fitness
I'm going to use my Wii at least 5 hours a week to help fill in the need for physical activity. For every 5 hours I'll earn a badge.

The Nom-Nom-Noming and Hydration
I'll be monitoring calorie intake using MyFitnessPal. The goal is to try to eat the recommended calories, but burn at least 300 calories that are not used for intake calories. I'll also be drinking the recommended 8+ glasses of water a day, depending on how much additional hydration I'll require due to physical activity. These are weekly goals to earn.

Weight Loss Goals
My goal is to lose 50lbs by August of this year. For every 5lbs I lose, I'll receive a Star Trek Medic Badge.

Humble Bundle Virgin. . . No More

I wrote about how I got involved in Steam with Dear Esther. Well, this weekend I went full balls to the wall and finally committed to a Humble Bundle of my own with a Steam account of my own. I am totally psyched and haloed in an after-glow.

What did I Humble Bundle?

The selling point for me? Worms Reloaded! Worms Armageddon is totally something from my early years dating my husband. I had so much fun picking out the cool voices and launching holy hand grenades! It was a game that, in a way, put a new spin on how I viewed video gaming. I became so addicted to Worms that I literally drove my husband nuts wanting to play it so much. I liked the strategy and all the different things you could do. I also appreciated the skill it took to really get yourself in the right place to do the right things to take out your opponent. May I add that I was also pretty good at the game and actually won more than I lost. As someone who is always competing against the big dogs, it was awesome to be able to win at a game.

It didn't hurt that Organ Trail, Broken Sword, The Bard's Tale, and Ticket to Ride were there. The others I don't know much about, but I am really excited to play!  I already broke out Organ Trail and have been trying to make it the whole way. I've been freaking out over the inverted mouse! AHHHH!!! I also love all this because I am able to challenge my gaming boundaries.Stupid mouse.

So yeah. There it is. It's official. I purchased a Humble Bundle with Steam Keys. . . oh yeah. I am feeling so uber special right now. . . like I know a little bit more about a life that has been hidden from me for so long. Mmmmm..... games..... love it.

Dear Esther

I have these bouts of craziness where I become completely obsessed with video games. I loved playing WoW, but I had sort of entered the fray when the fad had somewhat ended, which made it hard to play as a single-player (for a non-hardcore player like me). This was mainly because to level up faster I needed to do quests or dungeon runs with people. I became frustrated with the game and turned to other games that I liked., such as The Sims, Sims 2, or Sims 3. Those games typically ended in the standard development of Sims, no matter what expansions I added and I'd fall into doing the same thing over and over and over again anyways.  Then I wonder about my web-based games like Kingdom of Loathing or. . . my high school favorite, Neopets. I play Neopets only for the little webgames that mimic other popular webgames. Some of these games now have popular versions on Facebook, but I don't have to worry about paying or ads or anything if I play them on Neopets.
So I continue to re-enter WoW now and again to try to pick up my character, but I still fall into my old rut or not being able to get far or level up in a faster way. So I pull out my old standby. . .

I started playing Kingdom of Loathing in 2007 during a time when my life was chaotic. Ray introduced me to the game and we played together. We'd share items and we joined a guild together. I still pop on to play once in a while, but they've had some changes and it makes it hard for me to log in or I feel too out of step to achieve certain things. I usually head back into the game in December when the site celebrates Crimbo, which is always a great deal of fun with special christmas-based quests and items. Sometimes they break out and do great holiday themed stuff. I try to check-in often for neat gimmicks. Like right now they're doing something for their Trick-or-Treat quest and I'm keeping an eye on it. I enjoy being a Pastamancer, but there are some pretty fun characters you can be.

I love the game so much that I have Kingdom of Loathing pint glasses and Friend Jim funded Mr. Card Game from Kickstarter as a present for me a year ago (We're hoping it arrives someday. . .haha)! I like the nerdland quality of the webgame and I love the stick figures. When I teach my kids and ask them to draw stuff and they get all self-conscious about drawing pictures. I tell them to try their best and stick figures are alright by me. I'm anxious to see the game, though, because I'm excited about how I could potentially use it in my classroom.

Sadly, there are times when these oldy-but-goody games don't feed the need I have for gaming. Sure I could pick up one of my gaming consoles and play out my games there. I am still a firm believer in the awesomeness of Wii. My daughter now loves playing with it, so that's a bonus. Our Xbox360 is always left in question for me. A certain owner of a certain system tried to fix some of the problems with it and I still haven't ascertained its current functional status. If I did, though, start a game on a console on our TV, my daughter wouldn't give me the space I needed. Plus a certain husband wants to watch his MSNBC shows. . .bllllaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh.

That leaves me with computer games. I have been lurking around Steam for a while. I learned about Humble Bundles over the summer and I found out that Friend Jim and Ray were playing games they purhcased through Humble Bundle on this site called Steam. Look at them leaving me out of everything cool. Granted, my time is incredibly limited for gaming, but sometimes you just need that release from all the anxiety and stress.

Since my husband left for the night to tabletop game (I didn't go, because we didn't have a sitter for my daughter), I wanted to play a "video game" (I also had a day off the next day). I'd been itching to play for a while. So I kept browsing Steam, but I also didn't have the money to drop on a new game. I texted Friend Jim and when he got home from work he listed off a bunch of games that Ray had on Steam, since I didn't hear back from my husband about the PC games he had and where they had been stored during the move. So I logged into my husband's Steam account (oh evil wife that I am) and started browsing the games Friend Jim recommended. Not surprising, none were what I was really looking for, but it was something different to engage with.

The game I opted to play, because upon opening the game the visuals stunned me, was Dear Esther. Dear Esther is a story-driven game from The Chinese Room, a British game development company. You walk through a landscape and have elements of the story revealed to you. Instead of it just being a clue-finding game, you have parts of the story shared as you arrive at each location. What throws me off is it being a first-person point of view. I'm used to having a more third-person perspective on a game. It feels more comfortable. That's probably why I don't play FP-shooter games.

Bottom line here is that I branched out into a new gaming platform and I am totally psyched about it. Dear Esther told an incredibly spooky story that offered great visual surprises throughout the story. You are on an island and you are listening to voice-overs of letters to a woman named Esther.  It has a very British feel to it, which I found enjoyable. Replay-ability has at least an additional play or two out of it now that I've gone through it once for the standard effect of the game. I learned that certain pieces of information are omitted and offered during certain plays depending on which letters or areas are accessed. The game in its four parts was long, but I found it to have unique gaming features and a compelling storyline that had me spooked enough to be freaked when my daughter snuck downstairs and ambushed me with claims of her face hurting (she has a mouth owie).

I was pretty into the game. It was like watching a movie, but not. It wasn't a stressful game and I was able to finish it in one sitting, which always makes me feel a little bit more fulfilled. I mean, for example, I have so many half-done entries on this site, I have anxiety over whether or not they'll be finished! So it was one less anxiety on my plate.

Now I recommend a play of it if you're looking for something a little disturbing this time of year and you're looking for something visually stunning with a simplistic gameplay style. Just watch out for the water and the shadows!
